Salesforce retired Data Recovery due to security implications

On July 31, 2020, Salesforce retired its Salesforce Data Recovery service. It was never a robust solution for data recovery and protection. However, with this latest update, Salesforce has put data protection, backup, and recovery responsibilities on the backs of its customers.

Why did Salesforce retire its Data Recovery service?

Salesforce strongly believes in winning the customers’ trust and keeps it on the highest priority. And its Data Recovery service was not up to the mark!

It was unable to deliver a delightful customer experience and was neither fast nor reliable. It used to take 6-8 weeks to recover data and didn’t even guarantee 100% data recovery. Eventually, Salesforce discontinued its service on July 31, 2020.

What are the alternatives for Salesforce Data Recovery?

Salesforce offers multiple native options to its customers to routinely back up their data free of cost. Data Loader and the API as a method are two options to manually restore your data. (Restore the data such that relationships and the connection to the related records is not lost).

1. Native Data Backup Options

The following are the native data backup options to recover lost data in Salesforce.

  • Data Export Service

It enables you to export your data via a UI manually or on schedule.

  • Data Loader

It is a client application that can export your data manually, on-demand, and in bulk via the API.

  • Report Export

It lets you manually on-demand export your data via reports.

2. Third-Party Offerings

There are several limitations to these native options. They are slow, manual, and time-consuming. So, Salesforce recommends several third-party solutions from its partners available on the Salesforce AppExchange Services. There are many effective and comprehensive Salesforce backup and recovery solutions that allow you to automate backups of your data and metadata.

All you need to do is visit Salesforce Appexchange and search ‘Backup’.

Conclusion

Salesforce gave a clear message in its announcement – You are responsible for your business’s data safety and backup. With Salesforce Data Recovery Service retiring, it has turned out to be an opportunity for many disaster recovery services and third-party cloud backup services. These third-party backup and recovery solutions are going to take the center stage and provide data security and backup to its customers.
